Batteries
Deep-cycle batteries power house loads, while starting batteries deliver short, high-current bursts to crank an engine. Many boats and conversions use both, kept separate by a battery switch, isolator or DC-DC charger.
The main chemistries are flooded lead-acid, AGM and lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4). They differ in weight, usable capacity, charging needs and up-front cost. Read our battery types guide before you choose.

Batteries FAQ
What's the difference between a starting and a deep-cycle battery?
A starting battery is built to deliver a lot of current for a few seconds. A deep-cycle battery is built to be discharged and recharged repeatedly to power electronics, lights and appliances.
Can I switch to lithium with my existing charger?
Check first. Lithium (LiFePO4) batteries need a charger, alternator regulation and charge profile that match the battery maker's specifications. Many systems need a compatible charger or a DC-DC charger to protect the alternator.
How should batteries be installed on a boat?
Secure them so they can't move, cover the positive terminals, vent flooded batteries properly, and put overcurrent protection (a fuse or breaker) close to the battery on each positive cable.
Are batteries shipped like other items?
Some batteries are classed as hazmat and ship ground-only. The product page notes any shipping restriction.
