Circuit Breakers
Circuit breakers protect wiring like a fuse but can be reset after they trip, and many can double as an on/off switch for a circuit. Panel-mount breakers are common on boat distribution panels, while surface-mount and resettable thermal breakers are used for individual high-current loads.
Size a breaker to protect the wire it feeds and choose the right type for AC or DC circuits. Our wire gauge guide explains how wire size and protection go together.

Circuit Breakers FAQ
Can I use an AC breaker on a DC circuit?
Only if it is rated for DC. AC and DC interrupt differently, so always check the breaker's DC voltage rating.
How do I size a breaker?
Choose a rating that protects the smallest wire in the circuit, and that is appropriate for the load according to the equipment maker.
What does ignition protected mean?
Ignition-protected components are designed not to ignite flammable vapors, which matters in gasoline engine compartments.
Breaker or fuse at the battery?
Either can work. Breakers can be reset and used as a disconnect; fuses such as Class T offer a high interrupt rating for large battery banks.
